Melrose
Settled in 1882 and originally known as Brownhorn (after prominent local ranchers Walter Brown and Lonnie Horn). Horn was one of the partners in the New England Livestock Co., which had bought Old Fort Sumner from the Maxwells in 1884. When the company's fortunes went belly up in 1894, he cannibalized the Maxwell House for ceiling beams and other salvageable lumber for his home. Brownhorn was renamed Melrose (after the town of Melrose, Ohio) in 1905. Melrose (elevation 4,400 feet or 1,341 meters) has three restaurants. Fort Sumner is 34 road miles (54.7 kilometers) away, Portales 37 miles (59.5 km) away, Santa Rosa 79 miles (127.1 km) away, and Roswell 118 miles (189.9 km) away.
