Ruidoso Valley
When Paul Dowlin built his adobe grist mill above the Rio Ruidoso about 1850, a settlement soon sprang up that eventually became what is today the popular year-round mountain resort town of Ruidoso (elevation 6,900 feet or 2,103 meters). Surrounded by conifer forests and adjacent the beautiful Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, it offers a variety of outÂdoor recreational activities, colorful arts and aspen festivals, exciting quarterhorse racing from May to Labor Day and challenging alpine skiing from Thanksgiving through March. It has 70 places to stay, ranging from hotels and motels to condominium and cabin complexes. It also has a guest ranch, four bed and breakfasts, 25 private recreational vehicle campgrounds and retreats, and 35 restaurants. Fort Stanton is 26 road miles (41.8 kilometers) away, Lincoln 31 miles (49.9 km) away, Alamogordo 46 miles (74 km) away, Roswell 71 miles (114.3 km) away, Las Cruces 114 miles (183.5 km) away, and Fort Sumner 115 miles (185.1 km) away.
