Santa Fe
The oldest (founded in 1609) and highest elevation (7,000 feet or 2,135 meters) capital in the United States and the Santa Fe County seat, the City Different has become a travel destination of international renown. Much of its history stems from the oldest European road in the United States, El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (the Royal Road to the Interior Land, 1598-1821); the Santa Fe Trail (1821-80); and the Chihuahua Trail (1821-80). It also quietly welcomed traffic on Route 66 (1926-37). Back in Billy the Kid's day, Santa Fe had fewer than 4,000 residents; today it's home to 72,000 people. The metro area has 51 luxury hotels, resort-spas, and motels, 24 bed and breakfasts, 13 vacation rental businesses, over 240 restaurants, five private recreational vehicle campgrounds, world-class opera, 18 museums, and five historic districts. Albuquerque is 59 road miles (94.9 kilometers) away, Las Vegas 64 miles (103 km) away, Santa Rosa 107 miles (172.2 km) away, Fort Sumner 152 miles (244.6 km) away, Roswell 192 miles (309 km) away, Lincoln 195 miles (313.8 km) away, Ruidoso 206 miles (331.5 km) away, Las Cruces 282 miles (453.8 km) away, Silver City 297 miles (478 km) away, and El Paso 307 miles (494.1 km) away.
