Bernardo, New Mexico, 50 miles south of Albuquerque on I-25, is the gateway to the Bernardo unit of the Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl Complex, providing winter habitat for waterfowl and sandhill cranes. From here travelers can go east on Highway 60 up Abo Canyon to Mountainair or continue south to Socorro.

Bernardo is the home of the Kiva RV Park and Horse Motel, catering to seasonal senior travelers, residents, and travelers with any matter of furry pets. Travelers can leave the beaten track at Bernardo to venture along the back road to the ghost town of Riley, circling around Ladrone Peak. There are no services such as fuel or food, but the view of the mountains to the south is spectacular, especially at dusk.
