Red River

Northcentral Region of New MexicoThe sign at edge of town says it best: "Red River Welcomes You."

As early as 1905, the town began to play host to visitors from Amarillo, Tulsa, Albuquerque and other places where the hot summer sun made a cool mountain valley inviting.

The residents of Red River found that hospitality to strangers who enjoyed the wonders of nature, such as a clear running river full of fish, was a good thing. After all, the lust for precious metal that had led to the establishment of the town ten years earlier had declined in intensity. Serious miners had moved on to distant gold fields like the Yukon and only a handful of people remained in the valley that once saw an estimated 3,000 rainbow chasers pursuing their dreams.

From the renting of abandoned miner cabins to hopeful anglers came the foundation for modern-day Red River, often referred to as "The Mountain Playground of the Southern Rockies." Red River's main business is having fun.
