House

Southeast Region of New MexicoHouse, New Mexico was founded in the early 1900's. The village was named after John L. House, who built the first hardware store. The House Post Office was established in the corner of John's store. The House School has been in existence since 1907. There were also two subscription schools. In 1909, a larger frame school was built. In 1919, the area schools of Drake, Hope, Ford, Grand Plains, and Roosevelt consolidated with House.

The community continued to grow. In 1922, a large concrete structure was built and Curry, Ima, Lakeview, Perry, Hassell and McAlister consolidated with House to make it one of the largest school districts in the area. During the peak years, House ran 10 to 12 large school buses hauling approximately 320. Some of the students rode up to 60 miles to attend school. After the completion of the main building in 1922 an elementary building, a shop, a Home Economics cottage and a new gym were added. Over the years House has had many fine teachers and administrators who have kept it's curriculum up to state of the art in education. Students have an opportunity to take college level classes from Clovis Community College. A big percentage of House graduates go to college on scholarships.

Today, the school has new ultra modern facilities constructed in 1984. The gym and cafeteria are pre 1951. Most of our teachers possess Master Degrees or the equivalent. House is large in heart, dedicated to giving its students the finest education.
