Today, Governor Susana Martinez encouraged New Mexicans to support their neighbors and communities by shopping small for the holiday season.

“New Mexico is home to so many wonderful creative minds, and we have beautiful products made in our state that make it easy to give unique gifts during the holiday season,” Governor Martinez said. “With Christmas quickly approaching, I hope that New Mexicans uplift and support one another by buying local and keeping their holiday shopping dollars in our state.”

Governor Martinez announced three convenient ways for New Mexicans to shop local for the holidays:

  • On November 25th, many of New Mexico’s 28 MainStreet communities are holding special events in honor of Small Business Saturday, including Carlsbad, Clovis, Farmington, Los Alamos, Lovington, Roswell, Silver City and Truth or Consequences. In Farmington from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., shoppers can enjoy a holiday art walk, a holiday hayride and kids can create their own Christmas ornament art project. Visit NMMainStreet.org to find the MainStreet District nearest to you.

  • The New Mexico True Certified Holiday Gift Guide gives New Mexicans the opportunity to shop locally without leaving their home or office. The digital guide, now in its second year, consists of nearly 60 gifts that range from food and wine, to home décor and art. Every product in the guide is 100% made in, grown in, or born & raised in New Mexico. The New Mexico True Certified Holiday Gift Guide can be found at NewMexico.org.

  • For the person who has everything, New Mexico Magazine has unveiled “Giving NM,” a roundup of unique products made in and inspired by New Mexico. These gift ideas include whimsical handmade holiday cards, intricate textiles, and savory chile-infused snacks that are perfect for the hard-to-shop-for person on any list. “The Land of Enchantment is a haven for makers, and that absolutely shines through in the work of our small businesses,” said Tourism Department Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Latham. “With both guides from New Mexico True Certified and New Mexico Magazine we’re providing opportunities for New Mexicans to support their neighbors, and also make it easy for those who don’t live here to give the gift of New Mexico this season.”

The Economic Development Department reports that money spent at locally owned businesses has three times the impact on a local community than money spent elsewhere. Further, a key aspect of downtown revitalization is the rehabilitation and reuse of historic properties, which is often the case in New Mexico’s MainStreet districts.

"MainStreet is a year-round program that supports the business environment of New Mexico’s historic districts and town centers,” Economic Development Department Cabinet Secretary Matt Geisel said. “Many local MainStreet programs throughout the state offer holiday parades, open houses and shop local events to bring people downtown to support local small businesses, artists and artisans, and attract visitors downtown. When we ‘shop local,’ we support our small businesses and positively impact our local economy and community."
