San Lorenzo de Picurís

North Central region of New MexicoOne of the eight northern pueblos, Picuris village has occupied its present location since around 750 AD. The Picuris people previousy lived in an earlier, larger village known as Pot Creek, near Taos. Spanish explorer Don Juan de Oñate called them "pikuria" - those who paint.

San Lorenzo de Picurís has undergone more than eight years of loving restoration by Picurís Pueblo residents, preserving an important part of the pueblo’s history. The annual San Lorenzo Feast day is celebrated on August 10 with dances, pole climbing, and a footrace. There is also a self-guided tour of excavated structures near the church.
