Abiquiu is located 30 minutes North of Española and 1 hour from Santa Fe. In the 1730's, it was the third largest settlement in the Spanish province of Nuevo México. Artist Georgia O'Keeffe lived there from 1949 until shortly before her death in 1986 at 98 years of age.

The O’Keeffe Home and Studio is now a popular museum, and Ghost Ranch, where she once resided, is a multipurpose destination with event rentals, camping, and more. Beyond that, Abiquiu is home to, or near, a number of outdoor recreational areas and destinations, including Abiquiu Lake and the Echo Amphitheatre.

Lastly, Abiquiu is a very popular filming destination for Westerns and other movies This includes the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Cowboys & Aliens, City Slickers, Red Dawn, Wyatt Earp, The Last Outlaw, and the TV series Earth 2.
