Vista Clara Ranch Resort & Spa
The focal point of Vista Clara is the Great Kiva, a magnificent round gym with a sky light, decorative beamed ceilings and native American paintings on the walls. Southwestern Indians erect these ceremonial building to use in their rituals of healing, prayers, meditation and dancing. In this building, the fitness instructors teach aerobics, relaxation techniques, stretch and body sculpting. On warm days classes might be held outdoors in the Court of the Gods next to the swimming pool where water aerobics take place.
One of the most creative additions to the staff is the spa consultant on Indian culture who teaches classes that relate to the Indian point of wellness, as well as yoga and tai chi--similar to some native American practices. Guests learn about the medicine wheel, ancestral ways and Indian terminology as well as native crafts.
Vista Clara is the only spa in the United States to feature an authetic sweat lodge. Four states of intense heat are produced by adding burning rocks to a cneter pit inside a darkened tent. The sweating is meant to be physically therapeutic and the sharing of spontaneous thoughts to be emotionally cathartic.
