"Santa Fe is America’s answer to France’s Provence, the place with the luminous light discovered by the artists in the late 19th century; a place with ancient cultures that are not veneers laid over the landscape, not transplants, but that have grown up in symbiosis with the land, and truly belong."

? Henry Shukman, writer

Autumn in New Mexico. The last sturdy wildflowers lighting up the hills. Aspens turning gold in the mountains. Piñon smoke rising in the evening air. Northern New Mexico is sand and sage, plains and mesas, flame-colored cliffs —surrounded by sky and clouds that herald the change of time and weather. Join award winning photographer Craig Varjabedian and Tye Hardison this fall for four days to capture one of their favorite seasons in this enchanted land.

WHAT: The sun will rise over adobe churches and we will be there to witness and photograph. At sunset, cliffs will turn gold and crimson, and our cameras will focus on this miraculous change and beauty. This workshop is both a celebration and a challenge – to see the magic and beauty of the Land of Enchantment and to make your own images, from adobe details to magnificent wide-open landscapes. Wandering over the rocky hillsides, we’ll have the chance to see a unique New Mexico – the essential land in all its beauty and simplicity.

WHO: This workshop is terrific for all digital photographers who are familiar with their cameras. You will need to know before you get here how to set and use auto bracketing on your camera if your camera has this feature. You should be able to download, edit and manage images on your laptop computer. You should be prepared to carry your own gear and be capable of walking and light hiking on trails and varied terrain..

PLAN: During the workshop you will explore with your camera the remarkable beauty of autumn of Santa Fe and northern New Mexico with Craig and Tye, photographing color, texture, light, and shadow. While based in Santa Fe, we will car pool to locations within easy reach of Santa Fe, where you will receive one-on-one instruction in the field, on technical and aesthetic issues. During the class sessions we will help you understand the many aspects of digital photography like histograms and HDR, along with receiving feedback on your images.

BACKGROUND: The land and light of New Mexico has drawn artists, painters, and photographers for more than a century with its quaint adobe architecture, brilliant light and multi-cultural flavors of the Native Americans, Spanish and the Old West. You will photograph this enchanted land with Craig Varjabedian, in an unique environment in an atmosphere of adventure and discovery. Craig and Tye have explored and photographed New Mexico for more than sixty years (combined) and will share their favorite places with you.

WHAT TO BRING: Lots of enthusiasm for making pictures and a desire to learn and improve your photography. Your digital camera with lenses, a tripod and filters. A laptop computer with Lightroom or other image editing software installed and working. (We will provide a complete list of necessary gear before the workshop begins.)
