Book Release Party:  The Saga of Silver Tip

a true story by Doña Dillenschneider

The historic town of Cerrillos will host a unique event of personal and local history, as the legendary Doña Dillenschneider releases her debut literary memoir on Sunday, February 25 from 3-6 pm.  Doña fills the pages of her homespun chapbook, The Saga of Silver Tip, with charming memories of “the smartest bravest dog I have ever known.”   Funny, authentic and poignant, it’s all told in Doña’s inimitably brash style.  Not just a paean to warm the heart of every dog lover, the story also evokes the bygone magic of the Turquoise Trail.

Doña Dillenschneider  was born in 1950 and raised in Lone Butte, the vast expanse of cow country south of Santa Fe.  She bred, broke and trained her own horses for rodeo barrel race competitions and campaigned across the state in the amateur circuit.  Doña won the title of Miss Rodeo de Santa Fe in 1967.  She raised her family on the original land where she grew up and still lives there today, with a good border collie pup who reminds her of the amazing dog of her childhood.

The celebration will begin at Mary’s Bar, located in a hundred-year-old adobe building, for a pre-show Happy Hour from 3-4PM.  Then the party will move next door to Cerrillos Station for the book reading, signing and musical presentation from 4-6PM.  Musical guests Joe West, Margaret Burke and Sharon Gilchrist will encourage two-stepping and provide a soundtrack for the tales of local storytellers.

Cerrillos Station opened in 2016, reinvigorating a 130-year-old building which had housed the Whatnot Shop since the 1950’s.  It received a commendation from the USDA for its extensive environmentally-friendly, energy-efficient renovations.  Cerrillos Station is a multi-use space with an art gallery, mercantile boutique, yoga/dance studio, hair salon and massage services.  In addition to art openings, it also hosts literary readings and cultural events.

The charming village of Los Cerrillos is located twenty miles south of Santa Fe on Highway 14.  Over the last two centuries of its existence, it has gone from being a contender for the state capitol to a ghost town.  Its authentic dusty streets and adobe buildings have kept it a highly-sought backdrop for feature films and television series.

directions:  at the Galisteo Bridge on Highway 14, turn west onto Main Street.  After 100 yards, make a right at the first (only) stop sign.  Cerrillos Station is located at 15B First Street, last building on the right before the train tracks.
