In collaboration with the Taos Center of the Arts (TCA), 203 Fine Art is pleased to present a visual recollection and brief history of the Taos Art Association (TAA), with an exhibition
“Celebrating History, Taos Art Association at 70”. It has been seventy years since the formation of the originating organization, the TAA, which remains today as the Taos Center of the Arts. This exhibition will be on display where it all began, at the TCA, in their Encore Gallery. An online catalogue of the show can be found by clicking here.

The TAA began in 1952, founded by a group of 28 avant-garde artists. The group’s mission was to create a venue where forward-thinking artists could show art they wanted to create, going beyond what the commercial galleries expected them to create.

By early 1953, the membership in the TAA had grown to 100. They purchased what is now the Hernandez-Manby House property and opened the Stables Gallery, an artist-run cooperative. The Stables Gallery was immediately vibrant and became a place where the group known as the Taos Moderns and others would thrive. Creating the artwork which would sustain the national reputation of Taos as an evolving center for arts. The TAA would also offer workshops and drawing groups, and later built a venue for live theater where the founding artists embraced performance as well as visual art. The TAA survived many shifts and changes and ultimately became the Taos Center of the Arts, which continues to nurture and support the arts, including visual, performing arts, and film in Taos. The Stables Gallery is still maintained today as a space for regional artists and community members to share, display and sell art.

This exhibition will include the artwork of many of the original founding members of the TAA, as well as a select group of works by later members who will be at the opening reception to recollect their time within the organization. Recognizing that the TAA naturally connected to many other groups and organizations over time, the opening reception will include talks by Davison Koenig; Executive Director of the Couse Foundation, and Juniper Leherissey; Executive Director of the Harwood Museum, who will share their perspective on the evolution of the TAA, how it influenced and informed modern art in the region, becoming an essential part of the of art history in Taos.

This exhibition will be on view from September 17, 2022, through January 2, 2023. Related programming will include a lecture and conversation with David Witt, the author of "Taos Moderns Art of the New and Modernism in Taos," who will discuss the history surrounding the group of artists who founded the TAA. An Ekphrasis writer’s workshop focused on the TAA’s artwork as a literary device, will also be conducted by Dr. Steven Schneider, a Wurlitzer Foundation Poetry Fellow, a widely published scholar and poet, and founder of the MFA program in Creative Writing at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
