The 2018 Corrales Garden Tour offers amazing gardens on this year's tour; they are quite varied and provide inspiration for gardeners at all levels. All the private gardens which are located within the historic Village of Corrales, NM are new to this self-guided Tour, sponsored by Corrales MainStreet.
Many of the gardens feature some unusual plant material that may give you ideas for new plants that you could introduce to your garden, serving as a focal point or to fill in a spot that needs something special. You will see how a Curly Baby Locust and the Round-leafed Vitex are used in one of the gardens. Water wise plants that are suited to our challenging Southwest terrain are incorporated into all the gardens.
See how water features can provide background music for relaxing retreats as well as drinking areas for Lesser Goldfinches and other birds and insects. Observe how various plants such as salvias and cherry sages and feeders can be incorporated into your garden to attract and provide a haven for birds.
A newly created garden has incorporated raised beds, a vegetable garden as well as beds of grapes and raspberries along with a beautiful variety of ornamental plants and complimented by a variety of fruit trees. Some of the gardens have been created and maintained gradually over the years by the homeowners while others have been designed and installed by professional landscapers. There’s something for all levels of gardeners- from the newbie to the experienced.
Looking for more ideas- see how an interesting use of containers can complement any garden. Incorporating a variety of hardscapes including porous gravel pathways or flagstone and solid or lattice walls is another way to add interest and texture to a garden.
The Plein Air Painters are back for 2018! Watch them paint in this years featured gardens, and you may even spot them painting around Corrales during the month of May. All paintings will be offered for sale starting at noon on the day of the tour. Look for their tent out in front of Corrales Fine Arts in the Mercado de Maya at 4685 Corrales Road on June 3, or come browse the Gallery inside at your convenience.
