Dia de los Muertos in the Town of Mesilla
The celebration of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is very much alive and well in southern New Mexico. The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday in which family members celebrate the lives lived by their deceased relatives typically by bringing offerings of favorite foods and relics to their gravesites. In Mesilla, NM the celebration takes place on the plaza where locals construct family altars adding their relative’s favorite trinkets and photographs to honor their memory. Join Mesilleros at the Plaza for folklorico dancing, food, music, and traditional Dia de los Muertos calacas attire.
The festival is free to the public and held on the Plaza.
