With one of the largest elk herds in the state, the Valles Caldera National Preserve is the hidden gem of the Jemez Mountains. The 89,000-acre preserve encases the Nation's newest National Preserve, and is an elk paradise. To celebrate the upcoming elk rut and to learn about this fascinating creature, the Valles Caldera National Preserve is hosting the 8th Annual Jemez Mountains Elk Festival. Activities will include elk viewing, hiking and elk education booths where you can learn how elk antlers grow. This year's event has extended evening hours.
