"Santa Fe is America’s answer to France’s Provence, the place with the luminous light discovered by the artists in the late 19th century; a place with ancient cultures that are not veneers laid over the landscape, not transplants, but that have grown up in symbiosis with the land, and truly belong."
? Henry Shukman, writer
With ancient adobes, big skies, and stunning vistas to photograph and inspire you, come to the most enchanting place ? Santa Fe. Award-winning photographer Craig Varjabedian will share his favorite places and people with you and guide you to the best locations to capture the magical light that has inspired artists here for centuries.
WHAT: The land and light of Santa Fe, along with its adobe architecture, brilliant light and multicultural flavor have drawn painters and photographers for more than a century. Because we have established personal relationships, you will be able to have unique experiences—from capturing local cowboys to photographing spectacular sunsets at a historic hacienda.
WHO: This workshop is a terrific for all digital photographers who are essentially familiar with their cameras. You will need to know, before you get here, how to set and use auto bracketing on your camera if your camera has this feature. You should be able to download, edit and manage images on your laptop computer and be able to output an image file for review and comment as time permits. You will need to be able to carry your own gear and be capable of walking/hiking on varied terrain for each field trip.
PLAN: Whether you are pointing your camera at an adobe hacienda or capturing the dynamic weather, you'll spend time challenging yourself and honing your image-making skills. You will receive hands-on guidance and personal attention in the field attuned to your level. We will base out of Santa Fe and will be out photographing in both morning and evening light. Class discussions will be held at Craig's studio in Santa Fe. Along with receiving feedback on your images, you will learn and discuss different aspects of digital photography. Weather permitting we will photograph the night sky!
BACKGROUND: Santa Fe was called the Dancing Ground of the Sun by early Native American inhabitants and nicknamed The City Different by town fathers at the turn of the 20th century. By any name, Santa Fe is one of the world’s top award-winning and most beloved destinations—four centuries of history and legend, ancient and modern cultures, surrounded by a majestic landscape of juniper and piñon-covered hills, aspen and cottonwood groves with deep blue skies and radiant light.
WHAT TO BRING: Lots of enthusiasm for making pictures. Your digital camera with lenses, a tripod and filters. A laptop computer with Lightroom software installed and working. (We will provide a complete list of necessary gear before the workshop begins.)
