Written over a century after the 1864 massacre of Cheyenne and Arapaho women and children at Sand Creek, Simon J. Ortiz’s From Sand Creek is a powerful poetic statement about injustices done to Native peoples. Through his writing, Ortiz encourages Indigenous people to examine the process they have experienced as victims, subjects, and expendable resources—and asks people of European heritage to consider the motives that drive their own history. Everyone is invited to come discuss his thought-provoking work in this month’s edition of our Pueblo Book Club.
