The City of Rio Rancho’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and its Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful Division are seeking volunteers interested in receiving free training to become an official tree steward for the community. This year’s training will take place over the course of three days: • May 6th, 8:30AM-3:30PM • May 13th and May 20th, 9AM-3PM Up to 25 residents can be trained during the three day workshop at Rio Rancho City Hall, 3200 Civic Center Circle. Tree Stewards will be trained by professional arborists to assist at one local park, preferably within their neighborhood. A year-long volunteer commitment is requested to receive tree steward training, and only those 18 years of age and older are eligible to volunteer. Ongoing training will be provided. To register, please call (505) 896-8389. Those that are certified as a tree steward will work in teams of two or more and receive tools, training, and ongoing support to help care for trees in local parks. Tree stewards visit their chosen park and report tree and park concerns; assist with planting and pruning of young, newly established trees; maintain site conditions; report vandalism; and report water system problems. Since the tree steward program was launched in 2011, over 118 citizens have been certified as City of Rio Rancho tree stewards. For more information about the City of Rio Rancho, visit .
