Ruidoso's Sunday Gospel Brunch with Jamie & aka (band members: Jamie Estes/bass guitar & vocals, Dave Millsap/lead guitar & vocals, Bud Hewett/keyboard & vocals, Pete Davis/rhythm guitar and vocals and Joey Everett/drums) at Sacred Grounds Coffee & Tea House, is scheduled for this Sunday, July 15that Noon. The free concert will last until 2PM and it will be vibrantly filled with the unique… uplifting …fun funky music and voices of the band as they play and sing a variety of Gospel Music.

The Ruidoso Gospel Brunch’s band, “Jamie & aka” is not only a unified mix of  race, religion and non religion, the people attending the brunch are just as varied. It is a true community gathering of locals and tourists whose common denominator is an excitement in experiencing the uplifting Gospel music that is enjoyed at Sacred Grounds Coffee and Tea House once a month. This Sunday will see a return of one of Ruidoso’s favorite talents, James Parker, who will be singing lead on several songs.

There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Gospel Music genre has a serious following in Ruidoso and if you haven’t attended one of the Sunday Brunches, you might want to put this one on your calendar. The brunch has become a ‘standing room only’ monthly gathering, which has turned out to be somewhat of a family reunion for locals and a fun take away for tourists whose typically lazy Sunday, is jolted awake by the surge of spirited energy greeting them at the door. Just about every spiritual perspective is regularly represented but, it’s a purposely borderless soul connection with no religious agendas and that is clearly seen in the often animated camaraderie of everyone just having a good time and singing about the positive ‘good news’ of Gospel Music.

Attendeesare encouraged to participate by singing along, clapping or waving the free hand fans that are given out as reminders of an important part of Gospel music’s past. ‘Funeral fans’ as they were called, historically became an expected part of any gathering, as most buildings during that time did not have air conditioning. The fans not only cooled the exuberant but, they served as advertising opportunities for local funeral homes who hoped when the time came, their services would be foremost on peoples minds because of the fan’s advertising. The Ruidoso Gospel Brunch provides the same style of hand fans and people are encouraged to use them at the concert for cooling off or encouraging the band and then take them home as a reminder for the following month’s brunch.

There is no cover charge for the monthly brunch but, customers ordering some of Sacred Grounds food and drink specialties are a way to help offset the costs. Jamie has been insistent on there not being a cover charge and he stated, “it’s one way we can contribute and bring together our great community while enjoying some good lively Gospel music. The community aspect of the gathering is also seen when a guest musician is asked to join some of the sets, or someone in the audience is called on to do an impromptu song with the band. You will most likely hear great trumpet and flute playing on several songs from Sam Ponder, brother to Sacred Grounds owner Will Ponder, as well as some sweet harmonica sounds by local realtor, Don McMasters.

This month’s brunch is Sunday, July 15th and with such past popularity of the brunch, people are encouraged to come early and get a good seat, while relaxing with lunch or something to drink before the Noon kick off.

If the parking lot is full there is additional free parking across the street at the Village Parking lot just ½ block north of Sudderth on Grindstone Canyon. The recently completed rock steps lead from the parking lot, down to directly across the street of Sacred Grounds.

The Ruidoso Sunday Gospel Brunch starts at Noon and goes until 2 PM, people are welcome to come stay for the entire time or how ever long they can. “If you haven't yet experienced the fun time we have at the Gospel Brunch and whether you consider yourself a 'Christian' or not, the music is always energetic and invigorating. “Come grab a fan and let’s have fun with some great live Gospel music…although it may not always sound like your Momma sang it", exclaimed the brunch originator Jamie Estes.
