It’s not called the Great Muddy Endurance Race for nothing! Last year over one hundred intrepid runners braved the Gallup OHV/MX Park’s obstacles, heights and pits to gain bragging rights for the 1st annual 5K race. The landscape is amazing. Rugged red rock hogbacks buttressed against high desert landscape that will take your breath away. An obstacle course designed to challenge the dedicated athlete, whether 10 years old or 50+, it is fun, challenging and all for a good cause. This year the proceeds from the Great Muddy Races will benefit two of Gallup’s most worthy entities. Part of the RMCHCS Western Health Foundation’s 21st Charity Invitational, half of the money raised will go toward completing a project started last year—the new RMCHCS Wellness Center. This new center will be home to the rehabilitation department. Dietary specialists working with diabetic patients; physical, speech and osteopractic therapists; cardiac and stroke rehabilitation will all have a state-of-the-art facility, which will provide continued care to the residents of the community. In addition, community members will have access to classes and equipment designed to improve and sustain optimum health. The other half of the proceeds will go toward the renovation of Lions Hall on the UNM Gallup campus. This building is the original educational facility and was donated to UNMG in 1969 by the Gallup Lions Club. Over the years, it has served as classrooms, office space and meeting rooms. Now in need of some repair and modernization, it will become the home to UNMG’s Middle College. The renovated facility will house instruction for Gallup McKinley County School’s stellar program that allows high school students to earn their high school diploma and an associate degree from UNMG simultaneously. This program is ranked among the top ten secondary programs in the state of New Mexico. This year’s races will be held on Saturday, July 22nd . At this year’s event, there will be awards for first, second and third place finishers in all age brackets for the 5K and 10K races. Additionally there will be a children’s event— The Lil Muddy Monster —for ages 10 and under, as well as a scenic 3-mile walk/run open to all ages. The Park is offering free camping to all, as space permits. Additional camping will be available at the nearby Red Rock Park for a small fee. Racers will receive t-shirts, head buffs and admission to the evening’s barbeque. Additional meal tickets will be available for purchase. Other food options will be available on site throughout the day. The Gallup OHV/MX park is located at 139 Hasler Valley Road , only a short distance north and east of downtown Gallup, NM—the undisputed Native American arts capital of the region. Registration is now open on active.com and early registrants will receive discounted entry fees . Additional information is available by calling 505-863-7136 or 505-863-7519.
