Now in its fifth year, We Are The Seeds is an arts festival that unites a community of Indigenous creatives in Santa Fe each August. While the 2021 Santa Fe Seeds Festival has been postponed due to Covid-19 until its relaunch in 2022, Seeds manifests its important presence this year at form & concept. For this companion exhibition at the gallery, Seeds Co-Directors Tailinh Agoyo and Paula Mirabal build a dimensional biography of the project’s inception and growth through stories of the artists who’ve contributed along the way. The group exhibition features over two dozen Native artists whose work ranges from traditional beading, steel and textile practices to contemporary painting and wearable art. “The time has come where we, as Indigenous people need to share our own stories, in our own ways,” write Agoyo and Mirabal. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, August 13, 5–7pm with music performances by Zachariah Julian and Jennifer Perez.
“We Are the Seeds has always provided safe space to come together to celebrate the beauty and diversity of Indigenous art and culture, our communities, and each other,” writes Tailinh Agoyo, who works across Philadelphia and Santa Fe to bring the mission of Seeds to a wider audience. “There has been a lot of positive movement since Seeds was founded. Artists have made connections that have increased their visibility. People from all over share how they appreciate the work we do and how much they’ve learned about Indigenous people today. We love this opportunity to highlight the journey and to share what makes us, us.” Gallery Director Jordan Eddy emphasizes the impactful and ongoing storytelling on display when bringing the artists of Seeds together for this exhibition. “So much of this show is about connecting, about being human,” Eddy says. “We can see how Native artists reach across generations, across borders and practices. The ripple effect is truly breathtaking. This is a community that is indeed thriving, and we must look and listen. We cannot turn away.”
