Holidays in New Mexico
No matter where you are, the holiday season is a special time of year, but in New Mexico, you’ll find that our own twist on Christmas is unlike anywhere else.
The rich and vibrant traditions and heritage of the New Mexican people are reflected in our art, our architecture, our food, and our celebrations, and Christmas is no different. The melding of Spanish and Mexican influence and Native culture are seen in a beautiful and dramatic way during the most wonderful time of the year.
Mission churches, a hybrid of Spanish design influence and Native building materials, provide a picturesque backdrop for La Posada, a traditional Mexican parade reenacting Joseph and Mary’s search for a place to stay, and the crisp night air makes gathering around a softly glowing farolito even more inviting.
After a traditional meal of posole and tamales, there’s always room for biscochitos, and every New Mexican family has at least one member known for making their own version of this classic treat. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the holiday season is filled with inspiration and new traditions to add to your yearly must-dos. Once you spend December 25th in New Mexico, you’ll never see Christmas quite the same way again… and that’s just the way we like it.
