Last weekend people were able to bring their plastic bags into the Whole Foods on Wyoming in exchange for reusable bags. Keep Albuquerque Beautiful passed out the reusable bags to folks who brought in their single-use plastic bags. The effort is part of Keep Albuquerque Beautiful's overall mission to reduce litter in Albuquerque and educate people on how to recycle right. Plastic bags are some of the worst pieces of litter because they are difficult to recycle and are incredibly lightweight. Once a plastic bag is loose, there is no telling where it will end up; in trees, backyards, playgrounds, or protected wild areas, the wind can take them anywhere. Whole Foods offers an opportunity to recycle the plastic bags you have left, rather than send them to the landfill. Remember, plastic bags can only be recycled at special locations, not in your blue recycle bin.
