Depending upon season, see Pelicans, Grebes, Great Blue Herons, Rock and Canyon Wrens, Cliff Swallows, Ducks, Turkey Vultures, Ospreys, Peregrine Falcons, Eagles, Cormorants, turtles, lizards and others, on Nature Tours on Elephant Butte and Caballo Reservoirs in a 22 foot Lowe Deck Boat with a 150 HP engine. Safe and equipped with all Safety Equipment. Tours are given by John Bokich, who has more than 55 years of experience on these lakes, and holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Ecological Sciences from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). John is a Certified Wildlife Biologist with more than 50 years of experience, and lives at Elephant Butte Lake. Tours can also be by walking along the shoreline of the lakes, or along the Rio Grande River at Paseo del Rio, just south of the Elephant Butte Dam, or at Percha State Park about 20 miles south of Elephant Butte. Tours are for 2 to 4 people, and can include fishing for white bass, walleye, stripers, crappie and catfish while on the tour if you like. Tours will include descriptions of seasonal bird and wildlife species observed or expected, vegetation, geology, cultural history and geology of areas visited. Tours by boat will leave from one of the State Park boat ramps, and can be for 2 to 3 hours in duration or up to 6 hours as you desire. Tour dates subject to current weather conditions, and all attempts will be made to accommodate your time needs and constraints. Out of town visitors who stay at the Elephant Butte Inn will receive a 10% discount on their room. Guests should bring layered clothing for season, sunscreen, as well as food and drinks that they wish to have on the tour. Bottled water provided.
