The Hondo Iris Farm and Gallery is home to one of New Mexico’s most beautiful gardens and is open year round.
The gardens bloom all summer, with trails and pathways, even a short path through the woods, and picnic tables if you want to bring a lunch. There is a gold fish pond and a fountain. There is no admission charge, and there are provisions for handicapped visitors.
During May, and part of June, the gardens are filled with hundreds of blooming Iris: prize winning bearded, Dutch, Spuria, dwarfs, bicolor, and variegated. Visitors, who are so inclined, may order their favorite Iris(s) for August delivery or pick up. During the other summer months, lilies, poppies, wild flowers, and other varieties of native plants are in full bloom.
A new addition to the farm is a fairy garden with over 50 exhibits. The Hondo fairy garden is located in the forest area below the iris garden. Among its other up to date facilities, the fairy garden boasts a general store, a barbecue restaurant, a fairy flight school for the training of young fairies, a fairy ring with toadstools, a canoe, conveniently located on the side of the irrigation ditch, a fairy swimming pool, a troll bridge, a children’s fairy wishing tree, and even a fairy golf shop. Younger fairies can swing on a tiny fairy tire located high up in the trees, out of reach of any children or adults who might be visiting the garden. For added fairy protection there are strange fantastical forest creatures hiding in the forest trees, ready to scare away any unwelcome intruder.
