Monastery of Christ in the Desert
1305 Forest Service Road, PO Box 270 Abiquiu, NM NM

The Monastery of Christ in the Desert is a place where persons of all faiths or no particular faith come to be still and listen. A monastery is a place to meet God in silence, a place to encounter God who is present everywhere. \n\nOur guests, like our monks, come from all over the world. Visitors who join us for the day are welcome to worship with us, spend time in private prayer, walk our grounds and meditation areas, and browse our book and gift shop. Overnight accommodations are available by contacting the Monastery in advance.\n\nAll of our seven worship services, the canonical offices, are sung in Gregorian chant, mostly in English, with some Latin texts. Booklets with the chants along with handouts explaining our practices and customs are in the chapel, assisting visitors to participate with us in our life of prayer.\n\nOur monastery is located in a stunning canyon along the Chama River, surrounded by miles of Federal Wilderness. We are 13 miles off the highway, at the end of a dirt and gravel Forest Service road, renowned for its isolation, silence and beauty. The village of Abiquiu is about 27 miles away. There are no motorist services on our road.\n\n"The monastic church, designed by the architect George Nakashima, fits perfectly into its setting. The architectural masterpiece is a perfect expression, in adobe brick and plaster, of the monastic spirit.", said Thomas Merton.\n\n"O God, be gracious and bless us and let your face shed its light upon us." Psalm 66: 1
