This recipe is from our May 2020 Tasting article, "Feeding Time."

Cindy Holloway, owner of the San Marcos Cafe, says this pie is a customer favorite. We also asked how to make the restaurants legendary cinnamon rolls, but she declared that “a closely guarded secret.”

  • 1 stick cold butter
  • 3 tablespoons ice water
  1. Sift flour and salt together.
  2. Cut in cold butter with a pastry knife.
  3. Add water and mix until just combined.
  4. Turn dough onto a floured surface and roll to fit a 9-inch glass pie dish.
  5. Place in pie dish and crimp edges.

For the Filling

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  1. In a large bowl, slightly beat eggs. Add sugar, flour, salt, and vanilla extract. Mix.
  2. Add melted butter and stir well.
