We are pleased to present the winners of the 20th Annual New Mexico Magazine Photography Contest in the Landscapes category. The winning images reflect the wonder and beauty in the land all around us.
1st Place:
Snow in the Jemez, Jim Stein
“This photo was taken on Christmas morning in 2019 after an overnight snowstorm," says Los Alamos photographer Jim Stein. "It was still dark and still snowing when I woke up, but I knew the conditions would be excellent. I grabbed my snowshoes and headed for the Jemez Mountains. Soon, the morning light began to reveal a pristine blanket of snow all around. I hiked to this location just as the storm was clearing and the sun was beginning to intermittently poke through the fast-moving clouds, creating a mosaic of light and shadow. It was a striking sight to see and experience.”
2nd Place:
Misty Morning, Pam Dorner
Rio Rancho photographer Pam Dorner captured this glowing image of the Rio Grande at the Rio Rancho Bosque. "I woke up early to photograph the alignment of the moon, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars," says Dorner. "The skies were beautiful, but my eyes kept drifting back down to earth to the fog and light on the river."
3rd Place:
Moonrise at the Wedge, Aaron Martinez
“I shot the image in color just to see what it would look like and I was unimpressed," says photographer Aaron Martinez about Moonrise at the Wedge. "It wasn't until I switched my camera to black-and-white that I saw the true potential of this image. The photo was taken with an ultra wide lens and was a focus stack of two images, because I was less than three feet from the foreground rock.”
Honorable Mention:
Anillos Rojos, David Turning
Photographer David Turning of Las Cruces captured this colorful grouping of barrel cactus in the foothills of the Organ Mountains. "I found this bunch of barrel cactus about 3 years ago, but never had the conditions I was looking for (good light plus blooms on the cactus)," says Turning. "Earlier this summer, I finally caught them on a day when everything came together."
