FOR THOSE WHO LIKE A DROP of melancholy with their history, old cemeteries hit the mark. Graveyards of the Wild West: New Mexico (Arcadia), by Heather L. Moulton, delivers a starter set of 10 of the state’s many such sites, opening with the Fort Sumner resting place of Billy the Kid. Beyond outlaws, she tells of land barons, miners, soldiers, and politicians. Photographer Susan Tatterson’s evocative images will inspire road trips to small towns and lonely outposts. “Even cemeteries without famous folks hold a certain charm,” Moulton writes. “They are often nestled among idyllic valleys or mountains and capture New Mexico’s history.”
