Who would expect a UNESCO World Heritage site at the end of a rough road in the middle of a desert wilderness?

The Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway may be the most historically significant Scenic Byway in all of New Mexico. This Scenic Byway takes visitors along exploration routes used by Spanish, Mexican, and United States explorers. The trail will guide you to traditional Native American settlements of Pueblo and Navajo peoples. While on the trail you will also visit El Morro National Monument, The Ice Caves, Chaco Cultural National Historic Park, the San Juan River Basin, the Bisti Badlands, the Zuni Mountains and Zuni Pueblo. You will also see the modern New Mexican cities of Grants, Gallup,  Crownpoint, Shiprock, and Farmington.
