The New Mexico Clean and Beautiful (NMCB) grant is now accepting applications for the FY18 grant cycle.
Created by the Litter Control and Beautification Act of 1985, the NMCB grant funds efforts and initiatives focusing on litter reduction, recycling, and beautifying communities statewide. Through its partnership with Keep America Beautiful (KAB), the grant has fostered community leadership and fulfilled a collective mission to inspire and educate people to take action everyday that improves their community environment.
During FY17, $700,000 was awarded to support a variety of programs, projects, and events. A few notable awards included:
Bernalillo County– BernCo Bernie
A bilingual children’s book illustrates the adventures of Bernalillo County’s mascot sheep visiting open space and instilling the values of keeping areas clean, green, and beautiful.
Silver City– Big Ditch Park
Silver City created welcoming community gathering spaces and destination green space at Big Ditch and other city parks. The grant also supported efforts to solidify the city's progressive and environmentally friendly image through infrastructure, including birdhouses, bat boxes, and bee hotels that create a pollinator-friendly habitat.
Pueblo of Zuni– Trash to Art
A program that seeks to change paradigms so community members view trash as a resource, curb illegal dumping, and facilitate the creation of valuable, marketable, handcrafted jewelry, and other artwork that supplements local artists’ livelihoods.
