NEW MEXICO TOURISM DEPARTMENT
ACCESSIBILITY STATEMENT
Last Updated: January 14, 2026
- Our Commitment
The New Mexico Tourism Department (“NMTD”) is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. In furtherance of that commitment, we work to continually improve the user experience for everyone by applying the relevant accessibility standards to our websites, mobile applications, and other digital delivery channels.
This Accessibility Statement applies to all digital services operated by NMTD, including third‑party platforms through which programs or services are delivered.
- Conformance Status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (“WCAG”) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. NMTD is actively working to bring its digital services into conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards to meet the requirements of the DOJ's ADA Title II ruling. While we progress toward reaching this goal by the April 26, 2027, deadline, we are also striving toward conformance with the more recent WCAG 2.2 Level AA guidelines to ensure the highest level of inclusivity for all users.
- Known Barriers & Alternatives
NMTD is actively working to resolve accessibility barriers for the following areas:
- Visitor Information Center Kiosks: Currently, the screens on these kiosks lack screen reader capabilities, audio accessibility, and tactile keypads. Because the hardware for these kiosks is owned by the New Mexico Department of Transportation, NMTD is coordinating with the New Mexico Department of Transportation for funding the upgrade of the kiosks in the next fiscal year.. In the meantime, on‑site staff are available to personally assist visitors with kiosk navigation and to provide all necessary visitor information in an alternative format. Temporary signage with contact information is being installed to ensure that no visitor is left without support while upgrades are underway.
- Websites and Applications: NMTD has audited its websites with the Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool to identify missing alt-text and image descriptions and is actively working to identify and remediate any missing accessibility components.
- Documents: NMTD is working through a large volume of files created prior to April 2026 that do not have the same accessibility features as all new documents being created. NMTD is currently moving older, non-essential documents to the Historical Archive identified in Section VI(B) while ensuring that every new document created is accessible from day one.
- Feedback & Assistance
NMTD welcomes your feedback on the accessibility of our digital services. If you encounter accessibility barriers, or require assistance with any of the materials on our websites or mobile applications, please let us know through one of the following avenues:

- Technical Specifications
Accessibility of The New Mexico Tourism Department’s digital services relies on the following technologies to work with the particular combination of the web browser and any assistive technologies or plugins installed on your computer:
- HTML
- WAI-ARIA
- CSS
- JavaScript
- Ongoing Efforts
- Continuous Monitoring: We conduct regular manual and automated testing to ensure our digital services remain conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
- Historical Archive: Reference materials and documents created before April 2026 are maintained in a dedicated archive. While these are exempt from certain technical standards under ADA Title II, we are happy to provide accessible versions of any archived material upon request.
- Priority Remediation: We prioritize the accessibility of high-impact content.
- Vendor Compliance: We work with our third-party partners to ensure that integrated tools meet our required accessibility standards. As part of this process, NMTD reviews vendor accessibility statements and assesses known limitations when third‑party tools are used.
- Staff Training: Our team receives ongoing training to ensure that all new content, including social media and PDFs, is born-accessible from the start.
- Route 66 Application: We are working on ensuring a smooth experience for keyboard and phone users of our Route 66 App and, now that we have received the vendor’s accessibility statement (found here: Visit Widget's Accessibility statement), we are performing a manual verification to confirm it is fully navigable for keyboard and screen reading users.
