SANTA FE — The New Mexico Tourism Department (NMTD) announces the appointment of Shanna Sasser, Ed.D., as deputy cabinet secretary for the department.

Sasser brings more than two decades of experience in public service, economic development, and strategic community engagement.

Prior to joining NMTD, Sasser held key roles across state and local government where she developed a reputation for effective cross-sector collaboration, innovative policy solutions, and results-driven leadership. Her work has consistently focused on strengthening regional economies, supporting rural and tribal communities, and leveraging tourism as a powerful engine for sustainable development.

“We’re incredibly grateful to welcome Dr. Sasser to the Tourism Department,” said Acting Secretary Lancing Adams. “Her understanding of the interlocking elements of government operations, economic development, funding mechanisms and rural communities will further strengthen our abilities to bring tourism infrastructure and product development ideas to life.”

“I have a great appreciation for how my previous work has deepened my commitment to supporting communities of all sizes and finding creative ways to build economic prosperity,” Sasser said. “I believe tourism is one of the most powerful tools we have to strengthen New Mexico’s economy, and I am passionate about helping our state thrive through innovative strategies, collaboration, and thoughtful storytelling.”

Sasser previously served as economic development administrator for Los Alamos County where she led initiatives to strengthen the local economy through the expansion of niche markets in tourism, which helped contribute to an increase in visitation.

Prior to her role with Los Alamos County, Dr. Sasser served as the first rural ombudsman under the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration where she secured financing for water crisis response, local government projects, managed grants, and expanded the locations of infant surrender boxes around the state.

Sasser has also served in various roles in enrollment, advising and grant management at numerous higher education institutions. Dr. Sasser received her doctorate degree in Higher Education Leadership and Administration from New Mexico State University in 2020.
