New Mexico True Stories: Earthships
WHAT IS AN EARTHSHIP
There are six basic design principles that define an Earthship: building with repurposed materials; thermal/solar heating and cooling; solar and wind electricity; water harvesting; contained sewage treatment; and food production. Each of these design principles leverages existing natural phenomena and blends them to create a truly sustainable living environment, designed to collect water, produce electricity, and grow food.
VISIT AN EARTHSHIP
The Earthship Visitor Center is open 7 days a week, year-round. Both guided and self-guided tours of the Greater World Earthship community are available. Please remember that while tours are available to the public, the Greater World Community is a private community. Please respect the residents and signs posted throughout.
RENT AN EARTHSHIP
For those looking for a one-of-a-kind home-base for their Northern New Mexico vacation, there are earthships available for rent. There are several renting options depending on your party’s size, and many of the earthships are dog-friendly. Read about our video manager’s experience here.
OTHER THINGS TO SEE WHILE VISITING THE AREA
Rio Grande Gorge Bridge
At 650 feet above the Rio Grande, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the fifth highest bridge in the United States. Stand overhead to capture magnificent photos of the Rio Grande, or raft through it for more adventure.
Hot Springs
Just a half hour away from the Greater World community, you’ll find Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa—where you can soak in private pools, indulge in spa treatments, or hike through thousands of acres of public land. For a naturally rustic hot-springs experience, the trailheads to Manby and Black Rock Hot Springs are just minutes away. See all of the natural hot springs in New Mexico
Nightlife
Taos Mesa Brewing dubs themselves “a microbrewery, restaurant & indoor/outdoor "brewclub" on the spectacular Taos Mesa”. They have multiple locations throughout the area, but “The Mothership” draws regional and national music acts to an indoor stage and spectacular outdoor amphitheater. View more nightlife.
Skiing
Some ski resorts are manufactured for the masses. Taos Ski Valley is not one of them. Taos is a rugged, authentic mountain, pioneered by people who put skiing first and all else second. Novice skiers may prefer making the extra drive to Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort or Red River Ski & Summer Area for a smaller, less intimidating mountain experience.
