Burn your glooms and start anew at Zozobra
For more than a century, the Burning of Zozobra has been a unique cultural event that draws tens of thousands of people to Santa Fe. Initially constructed by artist Will Shuster, Jr. in 1924, Zozobra has grown from 6 feet to over 50 and has become synonymous with the release of anxiety, regret, and negative emotions that we have accrued over the past year.
Meet the Fire Spirits
In more than 100 years of burning Old Man Gloom, there have only been four fire spirits. In 2026, there will be a fifth fire spirit lighting the fire that cleanses attendees' anxieties and regrets. Helene Luna is passing the torch to Than Povi Martinez of the San Ildefonso Pueblo after 14 years of fanning Zozobra's flames. Martinez, who has graduated Loyola Marymount University with a bachelor's in dance, will bring her passion and expertise to the stage at Fort Marcy Park for the first time in September 2026.
