Clayton-Union County Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to our corner of New Mexico! We are located in the Northeast corner of the state and border Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. You will find many unique opportunities here such as: Capulin Volcano National Monument which provides the opportunity to walk on an extinct volcano and even go down into the crater. Clayton Lake State Park has excellent fishing with picnic and camping facilities. Over 500 dinosaur tracks can be viewed there and it offers an observatory for the star gazer in you. The Clayton Lake Observatory has received the Gold Award for the International Dark Skies. Hiking opportunities await the adventurous traveler on the Kiowa National Grasslands. There are also many spots along the Santa Fe Trail where one can view the wagon ruts left behind from the travelers heading west and also great views of Rabbit Ear Mountain which was a landmark on the Trail. The Union County Courthouse is where the outlaw Thomas “Black Jack” Ketchum met his end in the only hanging in Clayton in 1901, and his final resting place is at the cemetery in Clayton. Clayton and Union County offers a museum, parks for picnicking and relaxing, a 9-hole golf course, fairgrounds, swimming pool, and excellent hunting opportunities as well as other recreational activities. Clayton has a number of shops featuring arts, crafts, collectables, souvenirs and other merchandise.
