Following guidance from the CDC and recommendations from state and local public health authorities, some BLM New Mexico offices are temporarily restricting public access to some recreation areas. Datil Well Recreation Area Campground is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Datil Well includes one of 15 water wells along the old Magdalena Livestock Driveway. The old cattle trail was established in the 1800s and stretched 120 miles from Springerville, Arizona, to Magdalena, New Mexico. The recreation area includes 3 miles of hiking trails in piñon-juniper and ponderosa pine woodlands, with scenic views of the San Augustin Plains and an occasional glimpse of wildlife. There are 22 individual campsites, all with picnic tables, barbeque grills and fire pits. Some sites have have shelters for shade. Restrooms and drinking water are available. The Campground is open-year round. There is no day use fee, however, there is an overnight camping fee of $5.00.
