Exposed to the wind, within a sweeping valley of short grass prairie, amid the swales of the Santa Fe Trail, lie the territorial-style adobe remnants of the largest 19th century military fort in the region. For forty years, 1851-1891, Fort Union functioned as an agent of political and cultural change, whether desired or not, in New Mexico and throughout the Southwest. Fort Union is a unit of the National Park Service and is located 8 miles west of Watrous on state route 161. The park grounds are open every day of the year, minus Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. From Labor Day to the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, Fort Union is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. From the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, Fort Union is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, go to https://www.nps.gov/foun/index.htm
