The University of New Mexico created the first institute in the world devoted to the study of meteorites in 1944. From there, a small collection of meteorites grew into the Meteorite Museum that opened in 1974. The museum is an educational resource for New Mexico with over 5000 specimens and 650 samples, not including the meteorites on display. There are several samples of the stony, stony-iron and iron meteorites and a one-ton piece meteorite for researchers around the world to study.
