Since 1907, SAR has supported comparative research on human prehistory and multiple dimensions of human social life, ranging from how people make a living in difficult environments to how they create meaning through language, ritual, and art. For the last half-century, it has also nurtured the work of Native American artists by offering residential fellowships to working artists and providing access to one of the world’s best research collections of indigenous art from the American Southwest. SAR’s campus, on Santa Fe’s historic East Side, is an intellectual crossroads where interpretations of human behavior and values are debated vigorously and with respectful attention to cultural difference.
